Accounts Commission

Our overriding aim is to hold councils to account. In our audit work, we will evaluate how councils are demonstrating improvement. We expect councils to meet their statutory duty of Best Value by demonstrating a pace, depth and continuity of improvement in their performance. We recognise that it is for councils to make choices in where they focus their improvement work, but they need to be able to show how they have arrived at their choices.

We publish a strategy and annual action plan which sets out priorities for our work and how we will take them forward over the next five years. We report on the progress made against the previous year's action plan in our current annual report.

We also produce an engagement strategy and plan each year, outlining how we will work with our stakeholders.
